The Chinese elm is a stately deciduous tree commonly found in China, Korea and Japan. With its graceful, upright form, this species can grow to impressive dimensions, stretching 40 to 50 feet. Revered for its strength and resilience, the Chinese elm is famously capable of weathering fierce winds and physical stress. Even so, this tree met its demise during the intense storms that swept through northern California during the spring of 2023.
This particular cut reveals a print that resembles delicate, finger-like forms on stony coral from the genus “Porites,” inspiring the name for this piece.
